The nap system — two tracks: Ben is home by 11:30, lunch 11:45, asleep 12:30, awake 2:30–3. That clock binds Ben and one duty adult — nobody else. So the plan runs two tracks: Ben's track (early mornings out, home 11:30, post-nap play from ~3), and the big-kid track, where the nap window becomes the day's biggest free block — everyone else can be out from ~12:15 to 5:30. The family reunites for the 6pm Rampsbeck table at the hotel. The 25-minute rule still holds for the 5-year-old's drives.
Weather
Loading live forecast…
Live forecast for Watermillock from open-meteo.com — real forecasts exist ~16 days out, so this fills in from around 20 August. Until then, plan on typical early-September Lakes weather: highs 15–18°C, lows ~10°C, roughly a 1-in-3 chance of some rain each day. Reopen this file any time for the current picture.
The whole trip, one map
Colour = day (blue Tue · orange Wed · green Thu · purple Fri · red Sat). Every dot is labelled — tap one for details and links. Lines are as-the-crow-flies connectors, not driving routes — every drive is on ordinary A-roads, no mountain passes.
Day by day
Ben's rhythm: out by 8:45 · morning 9–11:05 · home 11:30 · lunch 11:45 · nap 12:30–2:30/3 · out again 3:15–5:30. Big-kid rhythm: same mornings, then free 12:15–5:30 while Ben sleeps. Everyone: Rampsbeck at 6.
Day 1 · Tuesday 1 September
Arrive against the traffic Train + van + station pickup booked
Forecast loads nearer the time — typical: 17°C, bright spells.
09:30
Avanti from Euston → Penrith, Carriage H, arriving 12:31.
🍴 Lunch
Picnic on the train — grab it at Euston before boarding (Leon and Pret are by the concourse) or pack from home. Ben eats at 11:45 on board, right on schedule.
12:30
Enterprise meets all seven of you at the station and sorts the van — Ben hits his 12:30 sleep time as you load, car-seat nap on the 15-minute drive, carrying on in the buggy on the lawns until the room's ready (early check-in requested).
If there's post-nap energy: Granny Dowbekin's in Pooley Bridge (10 min) for their famous gingerbread in the lakeside garden — a good first-evening leg-stretch with the village playground next door.
18:00
Rampsbeck, all seven — the first of your nightly 6pm tables.
Penrith station → Another Place: 15 min, A592.
Day 2 · Wednesday 2 September
Family climbing day to book — 8:45 start
Forecast loads nearer the time — typical: 16°C, chance of a shower.
8:45–11:05
Private family climbing with Keswick Mountain Adventures — request an 8:45 start at an Ullswater-side crag (Patterdale/Glenridding, 15–20 min) so the session wraps at 11:00 and Ben's home by 11:25. Both big kids on top-rope, grandparents too, Ben dangled for the photo. Fallback if it must be a Keswick crag: the climbing crew (8yo + grandparents + one parent) aren't bound by 11:30 and take the full morning; the 5yo, Ben and the other parent have a hotel morning.
🍴 Lunch
The Living Space at the hotel — quick, kids' menu, zero drive after a big morning. Ben eats 11:45; climbers roll into lunch as they land.
12:30
Ben down; duty adult gets a quiet lakeside hour.
12:15–5:30
Big-kid track: recovery afternoon — pool, lawns, shore. If the grandparents fancy taking the big two off during the nap window, the Ullswater Steamer from Pooley Bridge fits it easily (out 12:15, back by 3) — entirely optional. Ben's track: wakes 2:30–3, playground and shore from 3:15.
✦ Nearby
The Ullswater Way shore path runs right through the hotel's stretch of lakeside — a flat half-hour wander with the 5-year-old counts as an adventure when it ends in stone-skimming.
18:00
Rampsbeck, all seven.
Hotel → Patterdale-side crag (venue TBC with guide): 15–20 min down the lake road. Optional: Pooley Bridge pier, 10 min north.
Day 3 · Thursday 3 September
Ghyll scrambling for the big kid to book
Forecast loads nearer the time — typical: 16°C — and the ghyll is better in rain anyway.
9:00–13:00
The 8-year-old's special mission: Stoneycroft Ghyll (age 7+, ~35 min via A66/Braithwaite) with the grandparents and one parent — this crew isn't bound by Ben's clock, so they take the full morning. The 5-year-old and Ben: unhurried hotel morning with the other parent — pool, shore, lawns.
🍴 Lunch
Two lunches: littles eat at the hotel at 11:45 as usual; the ghyll crew grabs Bryson's of Keswick on the way back — a legendary Lakes bakery two minutes off their route (pasties, sausage rolls, Borrowdale teabread) — or holds out for a 1pm hotel lunch.
✦ Nearby
For the ghyll crew:Castlerigg Stone Circle is 5 minutes off the A66 on their drive home — a 4,500-year-old ring of stones with a full mountain panorama. Free, 15-minute stop, and the 8-year-old gets bragging rights to a second wonder before lunch.
12:30
Ben down on schedule; ghyll crew back ~1.
3:15–5:30
Aira Force (10 min): the 1.7-mile waterfall loop takes about an hour with stops — it fits this window with room for tea-room scones. Stone bridges, red squirrels, the 65ft fall. On the way back, pull in at Glencoyne Bay — the shore where Wordsworth saw his daffodils — for ten minutes of pebble-throwing. Home 5:30, seated by 6.
18:00
Rampsbeck, all seven.
Ghyll crew: hotel → Stoneycroft via A66 & Braithwaite (don't continue over Newlands Pass), Castlerigg on the return. Everyone at 3:15: Aira Force, 10 min south.
Day 4 · Friday 4 September
Lanty's Tarn, then the Lost Castle — divide & conquer
Forecast loads nearer the time — typical: 16°C, bright spells.
8:30–11:10
Earliest start of the week: whole family to Glenridding (15 min), walking by 8:50, up to Lanty's Tarn and the Keldas viewpoint — the classic postcard view down Ullswater — and back down by 10:50. The 5-year-old walks it, Ben in the carrier. Home 11:25.
🍴 Lunch
Ben and duty adult at the hotel, 11:45. The Lowther crew eats on arrival at the Lowther courtyard café at 12:35 — decent, fast, kid-proof, and it puts them at the playground gates by 1:15.
12:15
The split: Ben down at 12:30 with the duty adult; everyone else leaves at 12:15 for Lowther Castle (15 min) — 3+ clear hours at the Lost Castle plus the ruins and gardens for the adults in shifts.
✦ Nearby
For the Lowther crew:Askham, two minutes from the castle, is one of Cumbria's prettiest village greens if anyone wants a five-minute detour. And the drive home passes Granny Dowbekin's in Pooley Bridge — last chance for a box of gingerbread to take home.
3:15–5:30
Ben's track: wakes 2:30–3, then lawns, shore and a Swim Club session with the duty adult. Lowther crew rolls home ~4:30–5. Farewell 6pm at Rampsbeck, all seven. Rain swap for the Lowther crew: Rheged Centre (10 min further)
Morning (everyone): hotel → Glenridding, 15 min south. Nap window (big-kid crew): hotel → Lowther Castle, 15 min north-east via Pooley Bridge.
Day 5 · Saturday 5 September
Slow morning, home Train 13:05 + station drop-off booked
Forecast loads nearer the time — typical: 16°C.
Morning
No dash: proper breakfast, pack, and the big kids get a last splash when the pool opens at 9:30 while the adults finish up. Check out ~11:00, last wander down to the shore to say goodbye to the lake.
🍴 Lunch
Booths Penrith — the nice northern supermarket sits practically next to the station. Swing in at 11:35, build a proper picnic (their sandwiches and sausage rolls are a cut above), Ben eats by 11:45, and you're provisioned for the train.
✦ Nearby
Waiting time is covered: Penrith Castle — a romantic red-sandstone ruin, free entry — is in Castle Park directly opposite the station, with a good playground in the park. The best train-wait in the north.
12:15
Van back at Enterprise ~12:15; they shuttle you round to the platform.
13:05
Train home — Ben's nap happens right on schedule, rocked to sleep by the West Coast Main Line by 1:30. Home late afternoon, Sunday to recover before Monday the 8th.
Hotel → Penrith (Enterprise, then station): 15 min.

The 50-minute Howtown round trip doesn't fit Ben's windows, so it's not on the schedule — but it fits the big-kid nap-window track (Wednesday afternoon) if the grandparents fancy taking the big two: Pooley Bridge is 10 min north, pay-and-display in the village, 5-min walk to the pier, sailings several times daily, turn-up-and-buy. Adult £16.50 return, child 5–17 £11.50, under-5s free. Boats have toilets and indoor seating. Timetable & fares · 01768 482229.
10 minutes south on the A592. National Trust car park (CA11 0JS): £6 for 2h / £7.50 for 4h, free for NT members — if you're not members, a family membership can pay for itself on a trip like this. The circular waterfall walk is 1.7 miles, about an hour with stops: wooden bridges, viewing platforms, the 65ft main fall. Steps on the upper loop mean the buggy manages the lower paths but the carrier is better for the full circuit. Tea room, toilets and picnic tables at the car park. No swimming at the falls — it's a look-and-gasp waterfall, not a paddle.
15 minutes to Glenridding; park in the village pay-and-display (toilets there too). The path climbs from the back of the village past Rattlebeck Bridge — one steepish 20–30 minute pull that the 5-year-old will conquer with snack bribes — to the tree-ringed tarn, with the Keldas viewpoint (the postcard shot down the length of Ullswater) two minutes beyond. Leave the hotel 8:30, walking by 8:50, back at the van 11:05, home 11:25. Free apart from parking.
The divide-and-conquer slot: while Ben naps with the duty adult, everyone else leaves at 12:15 — Lowther is 15 minutes via Pooley Bridge — giving the big kids 3+ clear hours at the Lost Castle (5-minute woodland walk from the courtyard; towers, zip wires and slides that will absorb them completely) while the adults rotate through the castle ruins, the Story of Lowther exhibition and the gardens. One admission covers everything; café in the courtyard; typically open ~10am–5pm. Roll home 4:30–5 for a quick scrub before dinner. Book day tickets · 01931 712192.
The two guided mornings
Climbing (Wednesday):Keswick Mountain Adventures, 07900 282982 — private family session, all kit provided; ask for an 8:45 start at an Ullswater-side crag (Patterdale/Glenridding) wrapping by 11:00, and mention the 25-minute limit. Ghyll (Thursday): Stoneycroft Ghyll, Newlands — drive A66 then Braithwaite (~35 min), don't continue over Newlands Pass. Keswick Adventures (~£45pp, includes changing facilities and transport from their base) or Alfresco Adventures (£63pp, meets at the Newlands "Big Layby", CA12 5UF) — early September is term time, so book a private session rather than relying on their school-holiday drop-in slots. Party of 4: the 8-year-old plus three adults.
Climbing guide (Wed 2 Sept, 8:45am start): Keswick Mountain Adventures, 07900 282982 — request an Ullswater-side crag wrapping by 11:00; mention the 25-min drive limit and the 11:30 hard stop.
Lowther Castle (Fri, arriving ~12:30): book day tickets online for the nap-window crew — 01931 712192.
Rampsbeck bookings (Brad): update the nightly 6pm tables to 7 covers + a highchair, ref 914654ac1.
Hotel: early check-in email sent — chase if no reply a week out; confirm the cot is made up for a ~1:15pm arrival.
Kit: waterproofs and spare shoes for all, swim kit, toddler carrier, carsickness kit for the 5-year-old (front-row seat, window cracked, ginger chews) — guides provide wetsuits and climbing kit.
